About portsmouthguide.co.uk

Portsmouth is compact enough for the harbour to remain part of the daily view. A train arrives at Portsmouth Harbour beside The Hard and the Historic Dockyard. The Gosport Ferry cuts across the water. Ferries leave Portsmouth International Port for France, Spain and the Channel Islands. Down in Southsea, the promenade opens out towards the Solent, while Portsea Island keeps the city close, busy and slightly sharper around the edges.

The naval story is everywhere, but Portsmouth is not a museum with a postcode. HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and the Mary Rose give the Historic Dockyard its weight; the Royal Navy remains a living presence. Southsea has its own pace around the Common, Clarence Pier, Canoe Lake, Palmerston Road and Albert Road. Gunwharf Quays and the Spinnaker Tower put a newer waterfront beside the old ships. In Old Portsmouth, the Cathedral, Square Tower, Round Tower and Spice Island turn the harbour mouth into a place for a walk, a pint or a view across to Gosport.

Away from the water, the city has more than one centre of gravity. Commercial Road, Cascades, Portsmouth & Southsea station, Guildhall and the University of Portsmouth form the central urban stretch. Fratton has Fratton Park, Portsmouth FC and its own inner-city rhythm. Baffins, Eastney, Milton, Hilsea and Copnor each meet the harbour, seafront or residential city in different ways. Cosham, Paulsgrove, Drayton and Farlington sit on the mainland side of the council area and should not be written as if they were Southsea.

portsmouthguide.co.uk is for finding the places, services, events and practical details that make the city work — whether the plan is a dockyard visit, a Pompey match, a ferry crossing, a Southsea afternoon, a university day or simply getting across town without taking the long way round.

What we cover

We cover:

  • things to do, exhibitions, performances and family days out;
  • local events, festivals, commemorations and community activity;
  • food, drink, shopping and independent businesses;
  • practical local services and straightforward explainers;
  • neighbourhood guides and everyday lifestyle;
  • rail, ferry, harbour and getting-around information;
  • Portsmouth’s naval history, football, seafront, culture and changing places.

A page may be about the Mary Rose Museum, a show at Kings Theatre, a walk on Southsea Common, a match at Fratton Park, the ferry to Ryde or a local business on Albert Road. The city has a strong maritime identity, but not every story needs a ship in it. Sometimes the useful detail is a station entrance, a council service, a neighbourhood high street or which side of the harbour a place is actually on.

Portsmouth, Portsea Island and the places across the water

Portsmouth is a compact unitary-authority city centred on Portsea Island, with northern mainland areas including Cosham, Hilsea, Paulsgrove, Drayton and Farlington. Gosport, Fareham, Havant, Hayling Island, Chichester, Southampton, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are connected to Portsmouth in different ways, but they are not Portsmouth neighbourhoods.

Portsmouth Harbour is not Portsmouth International Port. The Gosport Ferry is not the Wightlink service to Fishbourne, and the Southsea–Ryde hovercraft is its own route. The Solent is wider than Portsmouth. Clear names matter when you are checking a terminal, timetable, ticket, road route or event location.

Useful details, not just landmarks

Ferry sailings, hovercraft operations, dockyard access, football fixtures, event routes, theatre programmes, opening hours and seafront arrangements can change. We aim to keep practical details current and point readers back to the relevant organiser, operator, venue, council, hospital or transport provider when a final confirmation is needed.
